This planting design in a walled podium garden in Chiswick was created to provide year-round interest and fill the space with colour. Existing containers with plants were renovation pruned and retained where they added benefit either from an aesthetic or wildlife perspective. High value pollinator plants were used as much as possible to provide forage for pollinators year-round, from the snowdrop, crocus, narcissus and allium bulbs planted in layers below the herbaceous perennials, to lavender, hebe, linaria, echinops, thyme and devils bit scabious, with climbing plants jasmine and wisteria. Evergreen trailing ivy and muhlenbeckia will grow and develop in time to cover the edges of the pots. Extra seating areas were added in amongst the plants to provide another perspective to view the garden from, including the potted Acer palmated ‘Sango-kaku’ for autumn colour and Prunus ‘Tai-Haku’ for spring cherry blossom.
